Just a quick post today. I’m watching CNN, hearing a lot about the mother who started beating her child because he was participating in a riot. It doesn’t seem like there’s much debate around how great this mother was, how she was doing the right thing. This is one of those many moments where cable news is just too terrible to watch. It seems like the depths of stupidity that no one seems able to connect an obviously violent home environment for this child with his recourse to violence in the street.
Do I blame the mother? Not really. She’s undoubtedly in a tough situation, reacting in the only way she knows how. Most parents do their best, and she doesn’t seem like an exception. But to have her actions praised as ideal is where our so-called experts go too far. The whole tone of this situation is being set by our media, and our media is saying, yes, hit your children. It’s good for them. And the relationship between violence at home and violence in the street is lost.
